Employers in Switzerland Hiring Internationals

Because Switzerland is not in the EU and runs an annual quota system for non-EU and non-EFTA permits. An employer hiring you from outside that pool has to show they could not fill the role locally or from the EU, and then draw on a limited allocation. That is real work and real risk for them, so it happens for roles they cannot fill otherwise: senior engineering, specialist research, medicine, finance. EU and EFTA citizens face almost none of this, which is why advice written for one group is useless to the other.

In Zürich tech and in the big international employers, often not: the language column says English primary where that is the case. Outside that, Switzerland is genuinely multilingual and the region decides which language, German around Zürich and Basel, French around Geneva and Lausanne, Italian in Ticino. Swiss German is another matter again, spoken everywhere socially and not the German you will have learned. Standard German still gets you understood and read.

The numbers are, and so is everything you spend them on. Rent in Zürich and Geneva, health insurance which is private and paid per person rather than deducted as a percentage, and daily costs are all far above German levels. Compare an offer against local costs rather than against home, and remember that health insurance is a monthly bill you arrange yourself rather than something that appears on the payslip.

It flags employers that run graduate schemes, internships or trainee programmes, which are the realistic doors for somebody without years of experience. Ninety of the ninety-seven name one; the seven marked General have a careers page and nothing aimed specifically at people starting out. Where it says Global, the careers link is the worldwide site and you will need to filter by Switzerland yourself. Those roles disappear quickly and reopen on a cycle, so subscribing to the alert on the company page beats checking manually.
