Before you start applying

Know the 140-Day Limit Before You Take Two Jobs

On a non-EU student visa you may work 140 full days or 280 half days a year, or up to 20 hours a week during lecture periods. If you have read 120 days somewhere, that figure is out of date: it changed in March 2024.

This is a residence-permit condition, not a tax rule, which is what makes it worth tracking properly. Work as a student assistant at your own university is normally treated separately, but confirm that with your Ausländerbehörde rather than a forum thread.

The other honest thing, and it is the reason to read the last column before anything else: almost every employer here asks for German. One says basic is enough. Not the warehouses, not the parcel depots, not the shift work people assume you can walk into without the language. The advice that a physical job will take you with no German is repeated everywhere and this list does not support it.

That is not a reason to give up on the list. It is a reason to know what the first job actually costs you, which is a few months of German rather than none, and to start that clock now instead of after a summer of rejections.

Questions People Actually Ask

How much am I allowed to work on a student visa?

Non-EU students may work 140 full days or 280 half days per year, or take a job of up to 20 hours a week during lecture periods. The old "120 days" figure is out of date; it changed in March 2024. Working as a student assistant at your own university is treated separately and usually does not count against the limit, but confirm that with your Ausländerbehörde rather than with a forum. Going over the limit is a residence-permit problem, not just a tax one, so it is worth tracking.

What is a Minijob and does it change my tax?

A Minijob is a job under a monthly earnings threshold where you pay no income tax or social contributions and the employer pays a flat rate. It is the simplest arrangement for a small side job. Earn above it and you move into normal payroll with deductions, which is not a problem, it just means you file and often get much of it back. Students on modest incomes usually fall under the annual tax-free allowance and receive a refund when they file.

Do I need German for these jobs?

For all but one of them, yes. That is the honest answer and it contradicts most advice you will read. Of the thirty employers compiled here, twenty-nine ask for German and nine want it good; a single entry says basic is enough. The assumption that warehouse and delivery work will take anyone regardless of language does not hold up against the actual listings, because those roles still involve shift briefings, safety instructions and a scanner interface in German. Plan for a few months of the language as part of getting the first job, not as something you do afterwards.

Is this pay figure what I will actually get?

It is the gross hourly rate as published when this was compiled in May 2026, and rates move with tariff agreements and the statutory minimum wage. Treat it as a guide to which employers pay above the floor rather than as a number to hold anybody to. Your net will be lower than gross unless you are on a Minijob, and shift work often carries supplements for nights and Sundays that the headline rate does not show.

You have the employers. A German student CV is a one-page Lebenslauf in a format most applicants get wrong, and it is the thing standing between this list and an interview.
